The western mouth of Provo Canyon begins where Orem's 800 North Street and Provo's University Avenue meet to become US 189. The route through the canyon is approximately 11 miles long and ends at the Deer Creek Reservoir Dam to the northeast. Provo Canyon Road has been designated as a "Utah Scenic Byway" for its beauty and historical importance. Part of the appeal of this drive is the Provo River, one of America's premier trout fishing streams, which runs parallel to the highway. To improve safety, Provo Canyon Road was expanded into a divided 4-lane highway between 1990 and 2010.
