Sundance Mountain Resort - Provo Canyon Utah
Sundance Mountain Resort was founded back in 1969, when actor Robert Redford bought the 6,000-acre piece of land. Once the property was purchased, Redford made the decision (against the will of his investors) to maintain the integrity of the place. Being a well-known movie star, Redford had artistic aspirations for the land as well. This meant establishing a center that was not only environmentally preserved but one that would also be accessible to creative minds. And thus, Sundance was born. Sundance is not named for the famed movie, but rather because of how the sun dances off the mountain.
Nestled at the base of 12,000-foot Mt. Timpanogos, Sundance is a 5,000-acre community destination resort, dedicated to maintaining the balance of art, nature and community. Created by Robert Redford, Sundance is a haven for discovery and inspiration. Sundance, listed in the 2008 Conde Nast Traveler’s Gold List and as a top 10 resort by Conde Nast Traveler’s 2007 Readers’ Choice Awards, offers diverse mountain recreation experiences year round. Ski, snowboard or enjoy cross country skiing in winter. Bike and hike during summer amidst breathtaking scenery. Only an hour’s drive from Salt Lake City and 45 minutes from Park City, Sundance is the resort you’ve dreamed about. Rustically elegant mountain cottages echo the simplicity of the natural setting. Award winning dining, a Native American inspired spa, and an Art Shack that features classes in painting, pottery and jewelry making make Sundance the perfect mountain get away. Sundance offers diverse mountain recreation experiences and encourages the cultivation of art and self-expression, as well as the conscious preservation of the land. While hiding away in the comfort of your mountain retreat, dine at the mountains own four diamond Tree Room, relax apris ski in front of the fireplace at the Owl Bar, or shop the Sundance store and take home a gourmet meal from the Gourmet Deli.
Did you know? An old Scottish family inhabited the Sundance property for nearly a century before Robert Redford purchased it in 1969.

Sundance Resort Eccles Outdoor Theatre The summer theater series started in 1969, but a rocky history fraught with issues such as high production costs and declining ticket sales made it hard for the canyon resort to keep the series alive. Ever since the partnership with Utah Valley University (UVU) in 2010, however, the resort has seen better results due to volunteer students performing all backstage and set work. Each summer season, a variety of events take place at the Sundance Outdoor Theater such as live plays, musical concerts, storytelling, and special performances. Delicious. Then we each enjoyed delicious salads topped with things like pumpkin seeds, roasted corn, and pomegranate vinigarette. Mark had a soda and I enjoyed a raspberry lemonade (with fresh raspberries in it of course). We endulged ourselves by both ordering a steak - Mark got the Rib-Eye steak with carmelized onions & marsala sauce, garlic & thyme mashed potatoes, green beans, and onion straws. (I told you I was going to be thorough...) I ordered the Filet Mignon (which we both agree ended being the tastier of the two) with a sweet shitake port sauce, potato cakes wrapped in bacon, and spinach. Yum! And, as you see in the picture to the left, we managed to somehow have room for dessert! And I'm so glad that we did. This picture is of my vanilla bean panna cotta with mixed berries...and I can say without exaggerating that it is the best dessert that I've ever had. Seriously divine. Mark enjoyed a brownie sunday with cherry/vanilla ice cream topped with hot fudge and a rich cherry sauce. Fantastic meal!"
